Cross Border Conservation Calculator

Welcome to the Cross Border Conservation Calculator, a tool for understanding the basic tax considerations for U.S. taxpayers who own natural lands in Canada. The Calculator is a supplement to the publication Save Some Green which was created by American Friends of Canadian Conservation (American Friends) and the Ontario Land Trust Alliance (OLTA) to inform U.S. taxpayers and their advisors about how bi-national tax benefits can help to protect Canadian landscapes beloved by citizens of both countries.  We are grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for its support of these tools.

The Calculator uses information you provide about your Canadian property and your finances to show sample financial outcomes of various potential dispositions. You, like many other landowners, are likely weighing whether and when to transfer your Canadian property to your heirs or other parties and/or permanently protecting it. Conservation can be a valuable legal and financial strategy because there are tax incentives in both the U.S. and Canada to encourage conservation of priority natural lands in Canada.

Of course, a simple online tool can only introduce fundamental concepts and incentives. You must rely solely on the advice of your professional advisors, from both the U.S. and Canada, to determine what is best for you, your family, and your property. There are other alternatives besides the basic ones we are able to highlight in the Calculator. Refer to Save Some Green for a more complete understanding of those alternatives.

The calculator uses two-factor authentication for security. Please complete the form below to begin the registration process and join our mailing lists so we can alert you when new information and tools become available. Your information from this form will be used at the second stage of the registration process to help you create a username and password so you are a registered calculator user and can log in to the calculator without coming back to this page.
